Tanzania lead at the Bamako International Marathon

Athletic Tanzania has nominated Mr. Samson Ramadhani Nyonyi and Mr. Oswald Revelian Kaharuzi to compete in Bamako Marathon in Mali with Mr. Leonard Thadeo -Director of Sports, Ministry of Information, Youth, Sports and Culture, Mr. Ammish Owusu Amoah- Director Bank of Africa Tanzania.

BANK OF AFRICA TANZANIA sponsored the 6th Edition of the Bamako International Marathon as part of the annual Corporate Social Responsibility and involvement in the community. The sponsored athletes carried the Tanzania flag high as Mr. Samson Ramadhani Nyonyi took number one position and Mr. Oswald Revelian Kaharuzi took fourth place during the Bamako International Marathon on 2nd February 2014, Mali.

In addition to organizing the marathon in Bamako, BANK OF AFRICA Group, creator of the event, mobilizes its network of BANK OF AFRICA and covers transportation and accommodation costs of foreign participants. This year, the mobilization was again significant with almost 40 persons (athletes, coaches and journalists) having participated. They came from 10 countries where BANK OF AFRICA Group operates (Benin, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Niger, DRC, Senegal and Tanzania).

The two athletes were up against runners from 15 countries that included Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Djibouti, DRC, France, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Togo, Kenya, Madagascar, Mali, Niger, Senegal, Tanzania and Uganda.

Addressing members of press, Mr. Ammish Owusu Amoah, Managing Director of BANK OF AFRICA TANZANIA at the acknowledgement ceremony presented the athletes with a gift of TZS 1, 700,000 which is in addition to TZS 4,080,000 which was awarded to them in BAMAKO, “BANK OF AFRICA TANZANIA promise to continue sponsoring athletes to other marathons and also offer them all the support they need to compete nationwide and worldwide so as to boost and move sports in Tanzania to a higher level. We look forward to working more with the Ministry of Information, Youth, Culture and Sports as well as the Athletic Tanzania and urge other corporate bodies to come forward and support athletics in the country. We believe that if Mr. Ramadhani and Mr. Oswald can make such a difference, with sponsorship and good support, other athletes can too, thus putting Tanzania on the Map in sports activities in and outside Africa.”
